Milestone Reached, But Campaign Against Polio Continues (article)

This article by Carol Cruzan Morton (with reporting by Nancy Fleisher) from  the Harvard Medical School's Focus Online (March, 2005) marks the 50th Anniversary of the National Polio Immunization Program. The historical overview profiles some personal stories: the 200 cases of polio after the 1955 initial immunization program began, and then suspended; the Scripts Institute scientists solving the structure of the whole poliovirus in 1985; personal stories and histories of survivors in the first iron lungs and the modern day fiber glass models called "turtle shells." Today, many of the estimated 1.6 million polio survivors are experiencing new fatigue and weakness known as post-polio syndrome.
