Polio Place

A service of Post-Polio Health International

CBC Radio Canada

From the radio station's digital archives are 14 TV and radio clips (spanning the years 1938 - 1995) about the history of polio, the vaccine and current post-polio syndrome issues.

The clips profile the realities in Canada during the epic before the vaccine where the " disease caused paralysis, deformed limbs and in the most severe cases, death by asphyxiation. In Canada, polio was so feared that as recently as the 1950s, it closed schools, emptied streets and banned children under 16 from entering churches and theatres." Patients living through the challenges of Post-Polio Syndrome are also interviewed. The site provides many links to polio-related sites.
