Polio: Combating the Crippler

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) "Polio: Combating the Crippler” radio and television archives provide live broadcast vignettes on the history of polio, from pre-vaccination epidemics, to successful vaccine discovery, to current post-polio syndrome struggles today.

Highlights include live TV coverage of the polio milestone event of Dr. Jonas Salk's 1955 announcement of the effective killed-virus vaccine at the University of Michigan assembly. Another TV clip, "Sabin vs. Salk" covers the 1977 live interview with Dr. Salk as he offers his opinion on his research. Copyright © CBC 2005
